On Monday, January 17, there’s going to be a must-see feature at Alchemy. I first heard New York slam poet Taylor Mali a year ago while I was downloading a bunch of spoken word audio and video files. What I heard set my mind on fire. If you’re a fan of performance poetry, or just curious, be at Tulip Cafe on the aforementioned date at 8 p.m. Free entrance, followed by open mic.

Three days later, on January 20, my good friends Fatty Lumpkin will take the main stage at Palac Akropolis. It’s been a treat to watch this hard-rocking, hard-working band graduate from blowing away packed cafes to getting butts a-shakin’ in a packed Rock Cafe late last year. Start: 7:30 p.m. CZK 100 cover.

Moving ahead another three days to January 23, R.E.M. is playing the Sazka Arena. The show’s sold out, so if you’ve got tickets I mad envy you. If you’re a German or Austrian tour operator that snapped up huge blocks of tickets (which occurred months before Robbie Williams’ Prague gig), I spit in your face.
