Ah, spring. A time of renewal, heightened spirits, young lust loveâ?? As I write this, I can see a couple of thirteen to fourteen year-olds devouring each other’s faces across the street. The boy’s got his hands crammed between the girl’s ass cheeks as their two friends, another girl of the same age and a short boy a couple of years younger, look on with envy and impatience. What they lack in tact and technique they make up for in passionâ??
Ah, Easter. A time of rebirth, of coloured and candy eggs, of chocolate bunniesâ?? and of drunken woman-whipping. Anybody who’s been in the Czech Republic at this time of the year has inevitably become acquainted with the controversial tradition of boys and men spanking girls and women with a pomlazka – a switch made of willow branches. As a reward for their “efforts” men usually get a shot of hard spirits (typically slivovice, or plum brandy) while boys get candy.

Where’s my shot, bee-yotchova?
When I first heard of this tradition several years ago, in Brno, I was somewhat taken aback, but not shocked. This was probably because my female students just laughed as they told me about the custom, even the ones who said they hated it. Many Czech women actually get upset if they go an Easter Monday without a whipping because the practice ensures fertility and beauty.
Female travellers to Prague have nothing to fear – in cities and big towns, pomlazka beatings tend to stay in the family. Czech villages, however, are another story: from what I’ve seen and heard, these are hardcore debauches that start early in the morning, and end around noon, when the menfolk keep their buzzes raging in the pubs while the womenfolk soothe their bruised and burning thighs and asses.
Ah, Czechsâ??
On a somewhat different, though no less decadent, note, Provokator.org is throwing what promises to be a mad bad kickass bash at Matrix (Konevova 13, Prague 3) on Sunday, March 27. Resurrect This! is a triple bill of back-from-the-dead dementia for Christ’s sake, featuring The Experimental Dental School, Blaq Mummy and Eniac. Provokator folk know how to write, rock and party – this’ll be a great way to gear up for good wholesome Czech-style Easter S&M on Easter Mondayâ?? if you’re into that kinda thing, of course.
