Gipsy: the Romany Tupac?

Aside from working all weekend (and missing out on Bear Improv’s debut at KavaKavaKava, and’s fourth anniversary), I managed set aside some time to watch Tupac: Resurrection, and all the special features included on the collector’s edition DVD. Anyone with even a marginal interest in hip hop, not to mention race relations in America, should definitely check this documentary. It’s a beautifully crafted tribute to a bonafide star and visionary.

Putting things in a Czech perspective, the movie got me mulling over these two questions: Could Romany rapper Gipsy be the Romany Tupac? Aside from him (and Mason City, Iowa, native Paul Polansky), what are members of the Roma community doing to help their cause here, other than being represented in photo exhibits that tend to go ignored?
As you consider these questions, here’s a little Gipsy for your listening pleasure (courtesy of, along with not one, but two features from Radio Prague.
