Visa renewal

After a long day of hand-wringing (while seriously considering a whole lot of neck-wringing) at the Canadian Embassy, the City of Prague Magistrate, the foreign police, and the local business license office, a day of being domestic seemed in order. A little blogging, a little surfing, and a whole lotta cooking and cleaning going on here. It’s Jitka’s birthday today, giving me a great reason to take the day off (finally!).

But this is just a breather – it’s visa renewal time, and this year is proving to be far more hellish than it was last year. I swear that bearing ill-will to all fellow human beings is requisite to getting a job with the foreign fuzz. No smiles, terse answers, god forbid any of them should speak any language other than Czech, and they seem to have really fucked things up at Building D on Olsanska – the building for non-EU applicants. On Monday they had the thug-thick crowd gushing out into the parking lot for Christ knows what reason.

I am sooooo not looking forward to spending the day there tomorrow. But the bright side is that it keeps me away from the PCâ??

While all the waiting and dealing with asinine civil servants (my local business license office being a shining exception – they’re fast and friendly out here in soulless Blackbridge) is a nuisance, I suppose things could be a lot worse. While on the B-Line, shifting my gaze from posters for upcoming concerts (Iron Maiden on May 28, Avril Lavigne on June 3), to lousy advertisements, to pasty faces, to pretty faces, and so on, I heard something bang against the door beside me.

This was while the train was on motion, and it sounded like somebody had kicked the door, or thrown a rock against it. Next thing I know this 20-something-year-old woman collapses to my left. Fortunately, she was surrounded by a helpful lot, yours truly included. Stating the obvious, it certainly put things in perspective – though it’s going to take a lot of effort to keep from losing it in the Building D crush and shuffle.
